Looking for an unusual rocket with some super sexy curves to it? The EXA rocket features a body that has no straight lines on it. It is molded from ABS plastic to give it the sleek streamlined appearance of those retro-looking rocket from the 1950’s. While this is harder rocket to build, you’ll like the way it looks and flies!

The EXA rocket is a non-traditional rocket in the sense that it has a curved body. It’s shape doesn’t come from a straight body tube, like a normal rocket rocket. The curvature not only gives it a swoopy appearance, but makes the rocket more aerodynamic and lowers the drag.

The body and the nose cone are made from pieces of molded ABS vacuum-formed plastic. It is much like a clam shell that are curved and hollow inside. When the two sides of the clam shell are brought together, they form a hollow tube. Unlike a typical plastic rocket, this arrangement makes a tube that is very lightweight.

The fins are made in a similar fashion. And to keep them strong and stiff, the skins sandwhich a foam-core insert. This foam-core insert includes a large tab on the root edge, so the fins are through-the-wall of the tube to further increase the fin’s strength. It is a very ingenious arrangment that combines strength with low-weight.

Another nice feature of the rocket is that it flies on 24mm diameter motors. This allows you to fly it with the inexpensive Estes black powder D12 motors. For higher flights, the rocket can also use composite propellant rocket engines, both single use, and reloadable motors!
